We have spent a lot of time talking about the teams with the first few picks in the draft, but let's face it, we won't be talking about them much in about a month. Most of those teams really aren't relevant next season. The teams that will be picking in the second half of the first round are the teams we should be talking about. The team that will make the most news will be the New England Patriots. The Patriots have 4 of the first 60 picks in a draft that could easily fill all of their needs. Remember, the Patriots were 14-2 last year and tonight they will potentially add 4 star players to fill those needs. If the Patriots get a pass rushing outside linebacker, a running back, an offensive tackle, and a 3-4 defensive end, they are going to be very difficult to beat next year. The rest of the NFL is going to have that "this ain't fair" look on their face when the Patriots keep going to the podium over the next few days.
The Patriots have traded down accumulating picks over the past few years, this year, it would not surprise me to see them trade up for a pass rusher. That is a glaring need. The talk today has been about moving up into the top 10 for Robert Quinn. But even if they don't move, the Patriots look poised to be clear cut Super Bowl favorites by the end of this draft. Bill Belichick hasn't won a ring in a while, and Tom Brady isn't getting any younger, I think the Patriots quit looking to the future and start drafting for the next Lombardi tonight.
